AARP Best Employers for Workers Over 50 is an annual recognition program that acknowledges companies and organizations whose best practices and policies for addressing aging workforce issues are roadmaps for the workplaces of tomorrow.
The program was launched in 2001 with the name AARP Best Companies for Workers Over 50. In 2002, the name changed to AARP Best Employers for Workers Over 50 to reflect AARP's interest in encouraging applications from a variety of employers, from both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. AARP recognizes that a growing number of American employers are developing progressive workplace policies and practices that are meeting the needs of an aging workforce. AARP seeks to share employer best practices with the business community and strive for employment opportunities for older workers.

The AARP commissioned a study by Towers Perrin that looks at why employers need to retain experienced employees over the age of 50. The study also evaluated what it takes for employers to make the work environment attractive to 50+ employees to want to keep working after their retirement.
The key findings of the study included these facts:
• Older workers are more motivated to exceed expectations on the job than their younger counterparts.
• 69% of age 45-74 individuals, who are either working or looking for work, say they plan to work in some capacity during so-called retirement.
• 68% of age 50-70 not-yet-retired workers plan to work in some capacity into their retirement years—or not retire at all.
