MGH and Boston MedFlight commemorate partnership

In critical care medicine, minutes matter. Since 1985, Boston MedFlight has provided high-quality, rapid emergency care services to patients throughout New England, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The nonprofit organization transports -- via its fleet of both ground and air vehicles -- approximately 3,000 critical patients a year throughout the region. Of these patients, 25 percent to 38 percent are brought to MGH for care.
Two events to recognize the longstanding and successful partnership between Boston MedFlight and MGH were held June 3. Suzanne Wedel, MD, chief executive officer and medical director of Boston MedFlight, gave a presentation to the MGH Chiefs Council detailing the historic relationship of Boston MedFlight and MGH. She thanked the chiefs for their cooperation and presented a model of the organization’s newest helicopter, the Sikorsky S76, to MGH President Peter L. Slavin, MD.
Following Wedel's remarks, a reception was held on the MGH helipad on Blake/Ellison 16. Hospital leaders and staff embers from the Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Department of Pediatrics and the Burns Service, had the opportunity to see first-hand the Sikorsky S76. The helicopter features the latest in state-of-the-art technology, including advanced ground proximity warning systems, a fully digitalized cockpit and high-tech weather radar.
"This unique program allows patients to access the special capabilities of hospitals such as the MGH from not only anywhere in New England, but also from anywhere in the world," says Alasdair Conn, MD, chief of Emergency Services and chairman of the board of Boston MedFlight. "We look forward to continuing our partnership with Boston MedFlight."
