The MGH has struck gold once again with the 2009 Get With The Guidelines (GWTG)-Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award, sponsored by the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association. The award honors hospitals that maintain an 85 percent or higher adherence to stroke guidelines for two or more consecutive years. These evidence-based guidelines are designed to ensure the best possible care of stroke patients.
In recognition of its achievement, the MGH was featured alongside other GWTG award-winning hospitals in an advertisement in the "America's Best Hospitals" issue of U.S. News & World Report. Hospitals can receive the award in the areas of coronary artery disease, heart failure or stroke.
"I am so proud of the MGH stroke service and its commitment to excellence and adherence to evidence-based care," says Lee Schwamm, MD, vice chair of the MGH Department of Neurology, chair of the multidisciplinary Acute Stroke Quality Taskforce at the MGH and national chairman of the GWTG steering committee. "It is an honor for us to receive this recognition and gratifying to know that it translates directly into better recovery, fewer recurrent strokes and healthier lives for our stroke patients."
