In honor of this month, Hyundai Hope on Wheels --a united effort among Hyundai dealers to raise awareness about childhood cancer and celebrate the lives of children battling the disease --presented a $100,000 check to MassGeneral Hospital for Children's (MGHfC) Center for Pediatric Hematology-Oncology to support the pediatric cancer research of David Sweetser, MD, PhD. Sweetser accepted the check on behalf of the hospital at an event Sept. 13 in The Howard Ulfelder, MD, Healing Garden.
In his remarks, Sweetser said that he plans to use the donation to better understand the causes of cancer and to help discover novel therapies that would improve cure rates in both children and adults. The treatments that his laboratory are developing also hold the promise of being less toxic for patients than traditional chemotherapies.
Following the check presentation Hyundai representatives toured the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit, to see how the state-of-the-art technology, soothing artwork and interiors, and comprehensive care teams all contribute to the process of healing a sick child. The event concluded with stories shared by patients currently undergoing cancer treatment by the MGHfC pediatric oncology team.
