>ME AND MY SHADOW: Allen, left, with Acevado
Job shadowing is one of the many ways the MGH Center for Community Health Improvement (CCHI) is helping to brighten the futures of local students. On Oct. 27, CCHI hosted a job shadow event for students from Chelsea High School.
The day began with a panel discussion in the Haber Auditorium featuring Danny Yagoda, MPH, health engineer, and Joan Brown, MBA, project specialist, both of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine; Adnan Abu-Yousif, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine; and Raymond Hawkins, LP, a perfusionist in Cardiac Surgery. The panelists described the work they do and how they came to be in their particular positions. A few spoke about the importance of mentorship and encouraged the students to take initiative in identifying their own mentor.
After the panel, MGHers met the students they were hosting and escorted them to their respective departments. For example, Solmaira Acevado accompanied nurse Michele Allen, RN, as she made rounds on White 11, observing while she checked each patient and monitored their vital signs. Meanwhile, in the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center, Joshua Small, a dosimetrist, explained to student Alejandro Rivera how he calculates computerized isodose plans for radiation oncology patients.
Rivera was impressed. "I was interested in being a pharmacist, but now I'm interested in this!"
CCHI will host its larger Job Shadow Day, an annual event that takes place on or near Groundhog Day, in February 2011.
