Bicentennial Corner 1.28.11


MGH pathologist Reginald Fitz, MD, studied the appendix and coined the word "appendicitis" in 1886. He also paved the way for lifesaving procedures, describing for the first time "a clear picture of the clinical course and diagnostic signs" of appendicitis, and clarifying the advisability of surgical treatment for this condition.
