GENEROUS GIFT: From left, Slavin, Young and Torchian
ANNE YOUNG, MD, PHD, chief of Neurology, made history for women in academic medicine by making a $1 million gift to the Department of Neurology through a deferred charitable gift annuity. In addition to her commitment to Neurology, Young also acknowledged the importance of general operating support by making a pledge to the MGH Fund of $5,000 over five years.
Young presented her check to the MGH on March 30 in the Trustees Room among colleagues and friends. Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president, thanked Young for her generous commitment and expressed the importance of Young’s accomplishments for the progress of women in academic medicine. “You are a wonderful role model and inspiration for women at the MGH and in academic medicine,” said Slavin. W. Gerald Austen, MD, chairman of the Chiefs’ Council; David Torchiana, MD, chairman and CEO of the MGPO; and James E. Thompson, vice president for Development, also expressed their gratitude to Young for her commitment to the MGH.
Young is the founder and scientific director of the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease and is a world-renowned expert in Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases. She and her late husband, John B. Penney Jr., MD, collaborated on the most widely cited functional model of basal ganglia, the brain regions affected by those diseases. Young is passionately dedicated to the advancement of treatment and research for these and other neurological disorders.
