Fifteen-year-old Mike Duffy III came to the MGH on Oct. 13 to say thank you to the physicians who saved his father’s life. Accompanied by his family, Mike met with MGH President Peter L. Slavin, MD, as well as Cancer Center physicians Tom DeLaney, MD, and Sam Yoon, MD, who treated Mike’s father last year for a rare form of cancer called leiomyosarcoma.
Mike proudly presented Slavin, Delaney and Yoon with a check for $1,250 to support sarcoma research at the Cancer Center. He raised the money this past summer by setting up a lemonade stand outside Foodies Market in his hometown of Duxbury. Mike and his father – who has been cancer-free since December 2010 and also is named Mike – managed their enterprise for four days and exceeded Mike’s $1,000 fundraising goal.
