SKILL SHOWCASE: Sainval, a patient escort since May, participated in the talent show.
Each year the MGH sets aside time to thank and recognize the many volunteers who selflessly give their time to patients, families, visitors and staff. Last year 1,533 individuals volunteered at the hospital, logging more than 105,450 hours.
Celebratory events during the week of June 25 included an educational seminar by Susan Briggs, MD, MPH, of the Department of Surgery, who described her work within the department and as team commander of the International Medical Surgical Response Team; an evening reception with speaker Anabela Nunes, director of Medical Interpreter Services; and raffle and prize drawings.
A new addition to this year’s recognition week was a Volunteer Talent Show on June 28 in the Thier Conference Room. Showcasing their skills were guitarist and singer Mai Doan; singer Alexandra Charest; classical pianist Louisa Moore; pianist Jonas St Fleur; gospel singer Jacky Sainval; guitarist Michael Simpson; jazz trumpeter Josh McDonald; harpist Becky Wertz; and opera singer Elena Cervone.
“It was wonderful to have some of our volunteers showcase their amazing and unique talents at the show,” says Wayne Newell, director of the Volunteer Department and Information Desks. “On a daily basis we observe the skills, compassion and caring that all of our volunteers bring to support and enhance the patient, family and staff experience at MGH. It was so much fun to see them share their extraordinary musical talents with the community too.”
