EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE: Jenny Bermudez, an MGH Bicentennial Scholar and Summer Jobs program participant
Working at the MGH this summer provided 147 Boston students with their first professional employment experience as part of the annual MGH Summer Jobs program. The six-week program offers educational and mentoring experiences for the students and for the MGH staff who supervise them.
“To the students, I want to thank you for bringing your enthusiasm and ‘can-do’ attitude to the work we do every day,” said MGH President Peter L. Slavin, MD, during the Summer Jobs celebration on Aug. 15. “I hope this was as good an experience for you as it was for us, and I hope to see many of you working here next summer.”
This year more than 70 departments and centers participated in the program, which is overseen by the MGH Center for Community Health Improvement. During the celebration, keynote speaker Karen M. Winkfield, MD, PhD, a physician in the Radiation Oncology Department, encouraged students to set goals but not be afraid to change those goals as interests shift over time and to develop a network of like-minded people to help them realize their dreams. “If you have a passion for what you are doing, you will be successful,” Winkfield said.
University of Hartford mechanical engineering student Christian Sandoval Repizo – who worked as a summer intern in the MGH Biomedical Engineering Department – told the audience that his Timilty Science Fair project, which he worked on with an MGH mentor, helped fuel his passion for engineering when he was a middle school student.
