MGHers get into the giving spirit
WHAT WOULD IT TAKE to raise more than $1 million in support of the MGH and the hospital’s charity of choice, the United Way? A pledge of just $1 per week from every employee. From Sept. 4 through 28 MGHers have the opportunity to make a gift in any amount to the “My Giving Helps: The MGH Fund + United Way Employee Campaign.”
New this year, employees can direct their charitable giving to the MGH Fund, United Way or both during the campaign. “This new campaign format gives each of us the chance to reflect on the ways our generosity truly helps drive innovation and world-class patient care within our walls while also building healthy communities outside those walls,” says Hilary Smiley Marshall, senior director of Development, My Giving Helps. “My Giving Helps celebrates the culture of philanthropy at Mass General and our greatest assets: our employees.”
The campaign has been gaining momentum all summer. On June 28, employees lined up to soak their colleagues and raise funds at the dunk tank during the Employee Summer Picnic, and more than 200 employees have won prizes by wearing the campaign’s signature colors on “Blue & Orange Days.” Seventy-four MGHers from across the hospital – including one pet therapy dog – recently participated in the My Giving Helps music video featuring a song called “Donate Maybe,” sung to the tune of “Call Me Maybe,” available online at www.mygivinghelps.org. A total of 102 employees are serving as My Giving Helps champions or volunteers to help promote the campaign.
“What’s remarkable about this campaign is that we are all employees, and we can all be donors,” says Marshall. “Already we’ve seen employees embrace the campaign and really want to be a part of it,” she added, referring to employees like those in the MGH Registration and Referral Center who created their own T-shirts for Blue & Orange Days with messages such as: “I’m a hero for giving,” and “Giving is good for the soul.” “We’re really encouraged by this excitement and hope that as the nation’s top hospital, we can be No. 1 in employee giving too!”
Throughout the month there will be more ways to get involved with My Giving Helps, including Blue & Orange Days Sept. 13, 19 and 25, and Star Performer, a singing contest held in collaboration with Human Resources, on Sept. 20.
