Celebrate the Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The MGH and the MGH Association of Multicultural Members of Partners (AMMP), with support from the MGH Multicultural Affairs Office, will host the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Program, Jan. 14 from 8 to 9 am in the East Garden Room. This year’s keynote speaker is Bishop Robert G. Brown, who is the Presiding Prelate of Covenant Christian Church Alliance, Inc., and Senior Pastor of Zion Church Ministries, Inc., in Everett. Partners HealthCare, the MGH and the Disparities Solutions Center will then host “A Celebration of the Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” Feb. 15 from 1 to 2 pm at Shriners Hospitals for Children, Auditorium (lobby level), featuring Dr. Carol R. Johnson, superintendent of Boston Public Schools.

Nominations for the Nathaniel Bowditch Prize
The deadline for nominations for the 2013 Nathaniel Bowditch Prize has been extended to Jan. 16. The $5,000 award will be presented to an MGH employee – clinician or nonclinician – who has made a significant contribution  to improving the quality of care at the hospital while reducing its cost. National Blood Donor Month
This January in honor of National Blood Donor Month the MGH Blood Donor Center is running a special lift ticket raffle to thank our donors for their lifesaving donations. All presenting donors will be entered to win a pair of lift tickets to Sugarbush, Bretton Woods or King Pines. In addition, all presenting donors will receive an MGH Blood Donor Center logo ice scraper mitten. Sasquatch topic of Podiatry Service lecture
The MGH Podiatry Service will host its 10^th annual winter lecture, “Sasquatch (Bigfoot): Legend Meets Science,” Jan. 26 from 9 to 11 am in the Haber Conference Room, located on Blake 1. Guest lecturer is D. Jeffrey Meldrum, BS, MS, PhD, professor of Anatomy and Anthropology, Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State University, who is a leading Sasquatch scientific researcher and expert on foot morphology and primate locomotion. Scholzman featured speaker at Coolidge Corner Theater
MGH psychiatrist Steven Schlozman, MD, will be the guest speaker at the Coolidge Corner Theatre’s “Science on Screen” program Jan. 28 at 7 pm. Schlozman will speak about the adolescent brain before a screening of director Wes Anderson’s 1998 coming-of-age movie, “Rushmore.” For more information and to purchase tickets online, visit www.coolidge.org. ACLS courses offered
The Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider course is designed to offer caregivers the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and manage the first 10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia arrest. The MGH Department of Emergency Medicine is offering the following two-day ACLS provider courses:

• Feb. 11 from 8 am to 3 pm in the O’Keeffe Auditorium
  Feb. 25 from 8 am to 1 pm in the Thier Conference Room
• April 8 from 8 am to 3 pm in the O’Keeffe Auditorium
  April 22 from 8 am to 1 pm in the Thier Conference Room

Clinical Research Programs

The MGH Clinical Research Program will host the following seminars:

•  “Welcome to the Genetic Code: An Overview of Basic Genetics” Jan. 16 from 2 to 5 pm in the Simches Center, Room 3.110. This introductory course will review fundamental language and concepts including DNA anatomy and genome organization; genotype-phenotype correlations; basic population genetics; and genotyping.
• “eIRB Training: A Hands-On Introduction to eIRB” Jan. 30 from 1:30 to 4 pm in the Simches Center, Room 230 (second floor computer lab). This training is a hands-on workshop for users that need to submit to the Partners IRB and will focus on the basics of how to navigate, track and submit common submission types using eIRB.
• “Guidance for Obtaining Surrogate Consent” Feb. 5 from 2:30 to 4 pm in the Simches Center, Room 3.110.The presentation will cover cognitive impairment and surrogate consent, IRB policies on enrolling subjects with cognitive impairment, identifying situations when a legally-authorized representative can be used, and describing situations when obtaining surrogate consent is inappropriate.
• “Basic Biostatistics for Clinical Research: Working Sessions” on Thursdays, from Feb. 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 2 to 3:30 pm in the Simches Center, Room, 3.110. This series is intended for investigators at the fellow and faculty level, and will give attendees the opportunity to focus in on more specific topics in biostatistics that are of interest to them and their research.
• “Study Electronic Data Capture: REDCap and StudyTRAX” Feb. 21 from 10:30 to 11:30 am in the Simches Center, Room 3.120. This presentation will provide an overview of two electronic data capture (EDC) applications offered through Partners Research Computing, REDCap and StudyTRAX.
