Programs:

The Children and the Law Program (CLP) was founded by Kenneth D. Herman in 1982 and has been located at the Massachusetts General Hospital since 1992.

Children and the Law provides mental health and legal expertise to organizations serving families with children and adolescents involved with the law, including the courts, and to individuals and families through their attorneys. Drawing on professionals with a broad and multidisciplinary range of experience with families, Children and the Law offers consultation, assessment, education, expert testimony, dispute resolution, parenting coordination, and training in the following areas:
  • Dangerousness of juveniles
  • Delinquency, youthful offender & status offense proceedings
  • Divorce and visitation disputes
  • Foster care, kinship care, permanency planning and adoption
  • Juvenile sex offenses
  • Malpractice claims
  • Medical and legal risk management
  • Mental illness
  • Munchausen by proxy
  • Neglect and physical maltreatment
  • Parenting Evaluations and Consultations
  • Post-divorce disputes
  • Psychological damages and personal injury
  • Psychological evaluations
  • Psychotropic medication and psychiatric diagnosis
  • Second opinions regarding school issues or parent-school conflicts
  • Sexual abuse allegations arising in the context of high conflict divorce
  • Trauma (including emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, loss & witnessing domestic violence) and its effect on children
CLP staff members are available to the legal, corporate and medical communities to conduct case conferences, seminars and didactic programs on a broad range of topics. These programs have included legal and ethical issues, psychotherapist misconduct, domestic violence, sexual abuse allegations, management of high-conflict divorce, child development and children’s competency to provide forensically relevant information. CLP also sponsors post-doctoral fellowships in Forensic Psychology. Ongoing research by staff in the areas of the effects of divorce on children, and Munchausen by Proxy enable CLP staff to share up-to date knowledge with CLP clients.
