Smoking Cessation Program
Research from the Massachusetts General Hospital Schizophrenia Program and others has shown that, with appropriate treatment, parients are able to safely quit smoking. The Schizophrenia Program offers a range of smoking cessation services to people with severe mental illness in the form of consultations, routine treatment and experimental treatments. These services are provided on an ongoing basis at the Freedom Trail Clinic of the Erich Lindemann Community Mental Health Center.
We offer specialized individual and group cognitive behavioral therapy for patients interested in smoking cessation. In addition, treatment with nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion and experimental treatments are available to those who are eligible. We also offer a smoking relapse prevention program for people who are able to quit smoking in our program. Patients need not receive their usual psychiatric care at the MGH Schizophrenia Program or the Freedom Trail Clinic to participate in the Smoking Cessation Program.
