Oliver Freudenreich, MD is a staff psychiatrist in the Massachusetts General Hospital Schizophrenia Program and director of the MGH First-Episode And Early Psychosis Program. He is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School and an Instructor at Boston University Medical School.
Dr. Freudenreich received his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. He completed his psychiatric residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (formerly Rutgers). Additional training included a two-year fellowship at Duke University in psychiatric research and a one-year fellowship at MGH in Consultation Psychiatry, a specialty area that provides psychiatry education services to patients admitted to the hospital with other conditions. The Duke fellowship exposed him to clinical trial methodology as well as sophisticated psychopharmacology of schizophrenia. For his involvement in research and teaching, he has received fellowships from the Society of Biological Psychiatry, from the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, and the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, and he was named “Teacher of the Year” in the Department of Psychiatry at Boston University.
His interest is psychopharmacology for patients with chronic schizophrenia. He has published articles, reviews, editorials, and book chapters in his areas of expertise. He is also interested in the optimal treatment and possible early intervention for patients who experience their first psychotic episode. Dr. Freudenreich received support from the Stanley Foundation for his research.
In addition to his work with patients with psychiatric disorders, he provides psychiatric care for patients in the Infectious Disease clinic at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
