The Center for Psychoanalytic Studies offers a psychotherapy training program in the
Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital called the Individual Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program. This program is designed to offer training in long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The entire program is a commitment of seven to eight hours per week for two years. The components of the program are individual supervision, clinical case conference, an experience group, courses in theory, technique and supervision, and an observed therapy and discussion. Parts of the program are available on an individual basis.
Program Objective
The objective of this program is to provide in-depth, sophisticated training in:
• Psychodynamic psychotherapy
• Psychodynamic supervision
A Tribute To Our Founder, Dr. Anne Alonso
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the death of Dr. Anne Alonso, the Director of The MGH Center for Psychoanalytic Studies, on August 26, 2007. Dr Alonso founded the Center to
teach psychodynamic psychotherapy, to advocate for high-quality care,
and to
support research in the talking therapies. Dr. Alonso wanted to
ensure
training and research in dynamic therapy "so that there will always be
someone
to talk to." Started by Dr Alonso in 1979 as a postgraduate
fellowship in
psychoanalytic psychotherapy, this program evolved into the Center
for
Psychoanalytic Studies in 1995.
Dr. Alonso was an accomplished, clinician, teacher and leader. In
addition
to her role as the founder and Director of the Center for
Psychoanalytic
Studies
and the Endowment for the Advancement of Psychotherapy at Massachusetts
General
Hospital, Dr. Alonso was a Full Professor at Harvard Medical School,
Professor
Emeritus at Fielding Institute, past-president of both the Northeastern
Society
for Group Psychotherapy and the American Group Psychotherapy
Association, as
well as author of numerous articles and books. Her many awards include
a
Lifetime Achievement Award from the Psychiatric Times, Woman of the
Year
Award
from the American Group Psychotherapy Association, Group Psychologist
of the
Year from the American Psychological Association, the Clifford Barger
Award
for
Excellence in Mentoring from Harvard Medical School, the Psychotherapy
Supervision Award from the Massachusetts General/McLean Hospital Adult
Psychiatry Residency Training Program, and most recently, the Ezra Saul
Psychological Services Award from the Massachusetts Psychological
Association.
Dr. Alonso cared deeply about the field of psychotherapy, her patients,
and
her
students. She never compromised her high ideals or belief in the
efficacy
of
psychodynamic psychotherapy, even when managed care threatened our
ability
to do
long-term work with those most in need. In response to cuts in funding
for
psychotherapy training, she established the Endowment for the
Advancement of
Psychotherapy, a non-profit endeavor that supports the teaching and
research
of the talking therapies as well as public education.
Dr. Alonso's untimely death cut short her astonishingly productive career. Yet as we continue forward, we cannot help
realizing
how fortunate we are to have known and learned from her. Dr. Alonso was
an
indefatigable optimist about the power of relationships to heal social
and
psychological wounds, and we at the Center are honored to carry forward
her
mission.
