Michelle Friedman-Yakoobian, PhD is a Clinical Fellow in the Massachusetts General Hospital Schizophrenia Program. She also holds the title of Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center Public Psychiatry Division of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Friedman-Yakoobian earned her undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies at Cornell University and her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
Dr. Friedman-Yakoobian’s research and clinical interests are devoted to the development and implementation of effective psychosocial interventions for individuals with schizophrenia and their families. She is currently developing a new program to help clients and families learn strategies for overcoming cognitive deficits related to schizophrenia. This program is funded by the Clinical Research Training Program (NIMH T32 Fellowship). Her dissertation involved the development, implementation, and evaluation of a brief psychoeducational program for relatives of individuals with schizophrenia. Dr. Friedman-Yakoobian has also participated in the development and implementation of cognitive-behaviorally oriented group programs for individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In addition, Dr. Friedman-Yakoobian works with clients and families in the First Episode and Early Psychosis Program (FEPP).
Dr. Friedman-Yakoobian has also engaged in basic research on the neuropsychology of schizophrenia. She has presented her work in both basic science and psychosocial interventions at several conferences and in peer-reviewed publications. Additionally, she has authored Everything You Need to Know about Schizophrenia (The Rosen Publishing Group, 2000), a book for teenagers about schizophrenia.
