ALS Therapy Alliance
Over the last four or five years, several academic laboratories in the
greater Boston area have undertaken new research initiatives into the
causes and therapies of motor neuron disease. We have recently formed
a consortium of these investigators in an ALS Therapy Alliance. It is
intended that this group will meet at regular intervals to share scientific
and medical insights into ALS and to foster collaborations. Initially
this will take the form of seminars and scientific and clinical endeavors.
Included in this consortium are investigators from the Massachusetts General
Hospital, the Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, the
Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard College, the Neurology
Department at Boston University, the Neurology Department at University
of Massachusetts, the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and the Department
of Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Research Collaborations
Dr. Brown his collaborators of clinicians and researchers
are engaged in several investigations with diverse sources of funding.
The premise for these collaborations is that such studies will accelerate
the discovery of therapies for ALS and other neurodegenerative disorders.
To that end, researchers at Northwestern, Duke, and Vanderbilt Universities
are collaborating with Dr. Brown's group on a research project involving
ALS genes. Investigators at Johns Hopkins, Boston, and Vanderbilt Universities
are working in conjunction with Dr. Brown's group to study the causes
of ALS.
NEALS The NEALS consortium was formed in 1996 as a group
of academic research investigators who are committed to improving therapy
for ALS through the development and conduct of controlled clinical trials
in ALS. MGH's Dr. Merit Cudkowicz co-chairs the NEALS consortium with
Dr. Jeremy Shefner of the
State University of New York Upstate Medical University.
The NEALS consortium consists of approximately 25 clinical sites with
expertise in ALS clinical care that are dedicated to bringing novel drugs
to clinical study in ALS. All data management for the group is performed
at MGH.
The scientific advisory board consists of Dr. Robert Brown, MGH and Harvard
Medical School; Dr. Jeffrey Rothstein, Johns Hopkins Hospital and Dr.
Robert Friedlander, Brigham and Women's Hospital.
