A team of researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital Critical Care Center was recognized at the 2013 Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Annual Congress for their work in patient and family support. The team, comprising physicians, nurses and administrators, led a study looking at communication between care providers and family members in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
"Family members interact with multiple care providers during their time in the ICU," explained Daniel Yagoda, MPH, senior manager of the Mass General Critical Care Center and one of the study's lead authors. "We learned that family members in ICUs are prone to receiving mixed messages from care teams—which is a new finding and one that will help us focus future improvement efforts."
The ICU Family Experience Study was conducted in two ICUs at Mass General: the Neurosciences ICU and the Medical ICU.
"This project is a wonderful example of the value created by working across ICUs," added Jonathan Rosand, MD, medical director of the Neurosciences ICU and co-author of the study. "Having a center like the Critical Care Center, which is specifically focused on ICUs, is truly unique to Mass General and a vital ingredient to our success."
The SCCM award for Best Abstract in Patient and Family Support recognizes Daniel Yagoda, MPH; David Y. Hwang, MD; Tara M. Tehan, RN, MBA; Mary Guanci, RN; Lillian V. Ananian, RN; Paul F. Currier, MD; J. Perren Cobb, MD; Jonathan Rosand, MD; and Hilary M. Perrey. The award was presented at the 25th annual convocation of the American College of Critical Care Medicine on January 21, 2013, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
