SCHEDULING APPOINTMENTS

ANNUAL EXAMS

Annual physical exams should always be scheduled with your primary care physician. Ask to be placed on our reminder list, and we will send you a letter three months before your next annual exam is due. You can also schedule any appointments online using Patient Gateway.

URGENT CARE & SAME DAY APPOINTMENTS

We reserve a number of appointments each day for patients who have an unexpected illness or injury. Please call the urgent care line at 617-585-7413 to request an appointment. Please do not use Patient Gateway for an urgent care request.

SPECIALIST APPOINTMENTS

MGH Back Bay offers onsite specialty services for diabetes care, mental health and physiatry.

Should you need it, your MGH Back Bay primary care physician can also refer you to a specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital or MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

24/7 EMERGENCY PHYSICIAN COVERAGE

MGH Back Bay has a physician on call for emergencies after business hours and on weekends. Please call 617-267-7171 to reach the physician on call. Patients with life-threatening emergencies should call 911.

LAB WORK & TEST

Our lab is open from 8:00 am to 4:45 pm daily. If your doctor orders tests, you can walk into the lab any time for an appointment. Results are typically available within 48 hours through Patient Gateway or by mail within 2 weeks.

Please remember some results can take several days or even weeks to return to your provider. Pap smears can take over a month to be finalized. Your provider may wait until all results are returned before sending you the results.

You may have your blood tests done at MGH or any of the affiliated labs outside of MGH listed here; lab locations specific to the North Shore are listed here.  Please remember to bring your blood work requisitions (physician orders), ID and insurance information each time you have your blood drawn.  The hours could change so please call the lab prior to your visit to confirm the lab's schedule.

NURSE VISITS

For your convenience, some routine care services can be scheduled as a nurse visit, including:

  • Blood pressure checks
  • Immunizations
  • Injections orders by your doctor
  • Tuberculosis skin test readings
  • Our on-site triage nurses can speak with you during business hours if you have a medical question or concern you would like your doctor to be aware of. Triage nurses can also offer suggestions to relieve minor symptoms at home or answer questions about your child’s health.
