For those who donate blood at the MGH Blood Donor Center, the true reward is helping to save a life. But on Feb. 9, individuals who donated at the center received an extra benefit -- cupcakes from local bakeries Curly Cakes, South End Buttery and Flour.

Additional donor cupcake tastings will be held Feb. 17 and 22, and those who donate this month also will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt. The added incentives come at a particularly important time. As a result of this winter's severe weather, hospitals across the nation have been experiencing the worst shortage of blood in nearly a decade.

To learn more about the Blood Donor Center, visit www.massgeneral.org/blooddonor or its new intranet site at http://intranet.massgeneral.org/blooddonor. Both feature information about donating and the center's latest news and event listings, such as the Feb. 25 blood drives that will be hosted on campus, at the State House and at McLean Hospital in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the Feb. 25, 1811 signing of the MGH charter. The charter had also led to the establishment of McLean Hospital. 9
