MGH Hotline 07.24.09 In eight-minute intervals, 45 participants each greet one another, discuss their accomplishments, challenges and goals, and then move on to the next person to do the same. Although the scenario sounds like "speed dating," it actually describes the Department of Medicine’s Women in Medicine Speed Networking Event for residents, fellows and faculty.

The annual event, now in its third year, took place June 22 and was sponsored by the Department of Medicine's Women in Medicine Initiative -- a departmentwide committee that aims to promote a sense of community among women physicians. The initiative works to assess and address the specific needs of women in the department, providing informational forums and hosting special events throughout the academic year to encourage discussion and celebrate the achievements of women physicians. Faculty from a number of divisions participated in the speed networking event, including the Cardiology Division, the Endocrine Division, Primary Care and the Gastrointestinal Unit, as well as current residents and incoming interns.
"Speed networking events provide attendees the opportunity to talk with other women in medicine and exchange ideas about professional accomplishments, challenges, work-life balance and career pathways," says Tanya Milosh Zinkus, program administrator. "The event has been held annually due to its widespread success. Faculty also benefit, because it is an opportunity to meet and network with other women faculty across the subspecialties of the Department of Medicine."
