Named for Jane D. Claflin, an honorary trustee who has championed women in academic medicine at the MGH, the Claflin Distinguished Scholar Awards are presented each year to outstanding women researchers who have the dual responsibility of caring for children. These competitive awards provide two years of funding to sustain research productivity during child rearing years and are intended to increase opportunities for women to ad-vance in academic medicine. Approximately 70 women researchers have received fund-ing since 1997.
"This award program recognizes that women shouldn't have to make a decision between having a career and having children -- they should be able to do both," said Nancy Rigotti, MD, director of the Office for Women's Careers and director of the MGH Tobacco Research and Treatment Center, in her opening remarks at the annual Claflin awards luncheon, held June 2 in the Thier Conference Room.
The 2010 winners are: Sherri-Ann Burnett-Bowie, MD, MPH, of the Endocrine Unit; Anna Greka, MD, PhD, of the Division of Nephrology; Shuzhen Guo, PhD, of Imaging and Neuroprotection Research; Simona Temereanca Ibanescu, PhD, of the Center for Biomedical Imaging; Noopur Raje, MD, of the Center for Multiple Myeloma; and Richa Saxena, PhD, of the Department of Molecular Biology. Three of the honorees -- Burnett-Bowie, Greka and Saxena -- presented their research at the event.
The Claflin awards program is sponsored and administered by the Executive Committee on Research and promoted by the Office for Women's Careers. Learn more about the Claflin awards.
