Maryellen Lewis, RN, BSN, OCN
Maryellen Lewis, RN BSN OCNRadiation Oncology Nurse at the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy CenterYears at Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center: 5 years (2 years at Mass General/Emerson Radiation)
What influenced your decision to become a healthcare worker? It all started at the age of 5 with my first doctor's bag and progressed when I had to have surgery for scoliosis as a teenager and was well cared for by my nurses. They made nursing seem like an interesting profession.
What drew you to the Cancer Center?I was working part-time out at a satellite Mass General radiation facility when the position in the Proton Therapy Center was posted; the position seemed like a new and exciting challenge.
What is your favorite part of working here?My favorite part of working here are my colleagues and patients. My colleagues are the body and soul of this institution. They are the most dedicated people that I have ever had the privilege of working with. The patients keep me grounded. The Proton Therapy Center treats a spectrum of ages so that one minute I am speaking to a 70-year-old, and then I turn around to take care of a 5-year-old child or younger.
Do you have any advice for those dealing with cancer, or their caregivers/loved ones?My advice to those dealing with cancer is to take one day at a time. Also, listen to your caregivers, since we are here trying to help you.
