The flash of cameras and a red carpet entrance greeted guests at the Westin Boston Waterfront June 7 as the MGH Cancer Center celebrated its fifth annual the one hundred gala. For the second year in a row, Academy Award-winner, actor and producer Matt Damon was on hand to show his support and help raise funds.
Damon's father is a multiple myeloma survivor who has been successfully treated at the MGH Cancer Center. At the event, Damon expressed his gratitude to the entire MGH team. “Growing up in the area, I’ve known that this hospital has always been a prestigious and remarkable place, but now that I’ve had such a personal connection through my dad’s illness and treatments, I appreciate just how amazing it really is.”
Each year, the one hundred honors 100 individuals or groups who have helped advance the fight against cancer. This year’s honorees included Mary Dempsey, who helped create The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at the Central Maine Medical Center through a donation from her brother, actor Patrick Dempsey, and the Grafton High School National Honor Society, which was honored for its many efforts to raise money and awareness for stomach cancer. Lung cancer patient Linnea Duff was another honoree celebrated for her activism. In a heartwarming turn, Duff nominated her own physician, Alice Shaw, MD, PhD, an MGH thoracic oncologist whose research in genetic testing is making a difference for lung cancer patients worldwide.
The night ended on a high note with an a cappella performance by the singing group The Dartmouth Aires. The gala raised more than $1 million, which will be used to further cancer research and patient care initiatives. To view the stories and photos of all 100 honorees, visit www.theonehundred.org.
