We organize all patient care through a team approach that
is comprehensive, compassionate and personalized. After carefully
evaluating the patient to determine the appropriateness of
a transplant, the team meets initially to explore all treatment
options and presents their recommendations to the patient
and the family. Once the course of action is agreed upon,
the team meets frequently to make adjustments in patient treatment,
as warranted. Because of the size of our program, we can provide
quick attention and response. Our attending physicians rotate
through both our inpatient and outpatient services. As a result,
our patients get to form personal relationships with all their
care providers and feel secure knowing they are receiving
continuity of care from a team that knows them well.
Team members may include bone marrow transplant specialists,
nurse practitioners, nursing staff of the Inpatient and Outpatient
Services, radiation oncologists, social workers, physical
therapists, dietitians, oncology chaplains and medical specialists
from other clinical subspecialties. Each patient works with
a patient care coordinator who arranges all the needed pre-transplant
testing, making it convenient for the patient to have all
the testing done in one or two days.
