Our
Services
The Claire and John Bertucci Center
for Genitourinary Cancers offers patients
access to a multidisciplinary team of
experts who work together to provide the
best possible outcomes.
- The multidisciplinary genitourinary
cancer clinic is held three times
a week. New patients are usually seen
within two weeks or immediately if
medically necessary.
- The initial appointment takes place
during one extended visit. We coordinate
a multidisciplinary team of experts
to develop an individualized treatment
strategy. Patients undergo a complete
evaluation with the multidisciplinary
team consisting of specialists in
medical oncology, urologic surgery,
radiation oncology, and others in
one day so that treatment can begin
as quickly as possible. Our goal is
to provide patients with information
and guidance that enables them to
make the most informed treatment choices.
Advanced
Treatments
For evaluation and detection:
We offer the latest techniques
for evaluating genitourinary cancers as
well as radiologists and pathologists
who specialize in the detection and assessment
of these cancers.
- PET
(positron emission tomography)
- SPECT (single photon emission computed
tomography)
- Functional
MRI
- MR spectroscopy
- Urologic endoscopy
- Nanoparticle
Enhanced MRI - a new
imaging technique that more accurately
detects lymph node metastases that
are too small to be seen using conventional
means.
Surgical Urology
Our
staff includes six highly experiences
surgeons who specialize in urologic oncology,
most of who also sub specialize in removing
specific types of urological cancers.
Our surgeons are recognized worldwide
for their organ-sparing techniques.
In addition to conventional surgery, we
offer the following novel surgical techniques:
- Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy
- Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy
(watch
video)
- Intra-operative
radiation.
Unusually
complex or rare cancers may benefit
from radiation therapy delivered at
the time of surgery; our radiation
oncologists collaborate with surgeons
in a specially designed operating
room dedicated exclusively for this
purpose.
- Radiofrequency
ablation and laser
ablation
- Bladder-sparing program.
We offer
a bladder-sparing approach that involves
limited surgery, in conjunction with
radiation treatment and chemotherapy.
Radiation Oncology
Some advanced approaches in radiation
therapies include:
- Proton beam therapy.
The
Francis H. Burr Proton
Therapy Center at Massachusetts
General Hospital
is one of three centers in the
US. Proton beam therapy enables
radiologists to target a tumor precisely
with a high dose of radiation with
minimal damage to surrounding tissue
and vital structures.
- Ultrasound-guided brachytherapy.
We are expert in implanting radioactive
“seeds” to eradicate cancer
and also determining which patients
are most likely to benefit from this
procedure.
- 3-D conformal and intensity modulated
radiation therapy.
Our radiation oncologists
use advanced image techniques to more
precisely deliver external beam radiation.
Support
& Coping
