Get to Know: James Matthews, RTT

An interview with James Matthews, RTT, assistant director of the Radiation Therapy Service

James Matthews, RTT

James Matthews, RTT, serves as the assistant director of radiation therapy service in the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. He has worked in the Cancer Center for almost 24 years and uses his expertise to coordinate and schedule treatments for patients at the Francis H. Burr Proton Therapy Center.

What makes you passionate about your work?

I like knowing that I am helping someone. We get to know many of the patients very well, and I enjoy forming friendships with them, especially our pediatric patients.

What do you find challenging about your work?

Since we have the only proton center in the New England, we see a lot of patients from great distances. Coordinating and scheduling the time to treat them can be a challenge, especially with patients who may be on protocols that require treatment within a certain time frame.

Why should patients choose Mass General for their cancer care?

First and foremost, our center enables us to treat many patients who can not be treated elsewhere. Proton therapy gives very precise doses of radiation without damaging the surrounding tissue. All of our staff is very experienced and skilled at what they do, and they show such a high level of compassion and dedication to personalized care.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

I love the warm weather, so when I can, I enjoy vacationing someplace warm and sunny, preferably with a great beach.
