Hematology and Medical Oncology

Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center’s Hematology Oncology Fellowship program trains tomorrow’s leaders in cancer research and patient care.In 1996, Dana-Farber/Partners joined together three previously separate fellowship training programs at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Brigham and Women's Hospital to create the combined Dana-Farber/Partners Adult Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program. In early 1998, the combined program received a full, five-year accreditation from the Residency Review Committee in Internal Medicine of the American Council for Graduate Education.

This training program has quickly become one of the most highly sought after and selective in the nation. Approximately 240 physicians complete applications for 14 available fellowships. The high caliber of the program is reflected in its fellows: all complete top residency programs, a significant percentage have doctoral degrees, and many have receive major grants from organizations such as the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists, and the National Institutes of Health. Notably, three of every four of the program's alumni have remained in academic medicine -- a higher percentage than any other fellowship program in the United States -- ensuring that their knowledge and expertise will be shared by others.

In the first year of the combined program, the 14 fellows have primary responsibility for patient care, working as members of a team that also includes more senior physicians. The fellows are divided into two groups, with each group spending six months in advanced clinical training at Massachusetts General Hospital and six months at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Hospital campus, with exposure to each of the 12 treatment programs. In the second year, fellows conduct laboratory or clinical research while continuing to care for patients. Those who decide to pursue both hematology and medical oncology, rather than specializing in either one or the other, continue their fellowship for a third year. What makes this program so attractive for young physicians is the access it provides to the considerable resources of three leaders in cancer research and patient care.
