Radiation Oncology
The Radiation Oncology residency program at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center utilizes the most current therapies available including the Northeast Proton Therapy unit. The Residency Review Committee for Radiation Oncology has just given accreditation for the formation of a new Harvard-wide radiation oncology residency program. This program combines two of the top national programs: the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Joint Center for Radiation Oncology. Both were superior programs before the merger and there is a great deal of enthusiasm about the combined program. During last year's matching process we had over 200 applicants for only seven positions. The combined program will continue the strong academic traditions of its predecessors. A significant percentage of the applicants have doctoral degrees and many have received major grants from prestigious organizations.

In the first two years of the combined program, the residents rotate around the core clinical services at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Beth Israel Hospital. A third year is devoted to research with a broad range of opportunities available. These extend from basic bench work though translational projects to clinical studies and evaluations of public health issues. In the fourth year residents return to the specialist rotations at the core hospitals and have the opportunity for elective time elsewhere.

Application procedure
Because of the large number of applicants for the radiation oncology residency program, we are now only receiving applications through the ERAS system. The completed applications will be evaluated by members of the selection committee in late October. Selected candidates are invited for an interview in November and December. At the time of an applicant's visit, he/she will meet with faculty and trainees at both the Massachusetts General Hospital and Longwood sites and will receive a tour of the facilities. The Selection Committee begins its deliberations in January and final decisions are made in mid-February for the class entering the Program 6-8 months later.
