"12,402 Steps to Cure Sarcoma Walk" raised
$75,000 for Sarcoma Research
Fifteen members from the Hunter Yates family
gathered in the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care June
29, 2005 to present a generous donation to David Harmon,
MD, of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, and the
Jennifer Hunter Yates Sarcoma Fund at the Massachusetts
General Hospital Cancer Center. The donation will benefit
Harmon's research in sarcoma - a rare and devastating form
of cancer that affects the connective tissue.
The fund
was named in honor of Jennifer Hunter Yates, who battled
sarcoma for 17 months before succumbing to the disease
in April 2004.
The
Hunter Yates family raised $75,000 through the "12,402
Steps to Cure Sarcoma Walk" May 7 in Hudson, Mass. The
12,402 steps represented the days that Jennifer Hunter
Yates was alive. "This is a proud day for the Hunter Yates
family," said Bob Yates, Jennifer's husband. "Jen always
referred to Mass General as her home, so it was a no brainer
as to where this donation would go. We are extremely happy
to be able to help fight this disease."
