MGH surgeons play for charity
SURGEON MUSICIANS: The Sagittal Band
Being skilled and dexterous with their hands is required of surgeons, who daily use special instruments that most people would never have the opportunity to handle. On Oct. 7, several MGH and Partners HealthCare surgeons will put their nimble fingers to good use in other ways -- playing their musical instruments as part of two blues/rock bands at a concert presented in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), held in Boston Oct. 6 through 8.
"We are thrilled to be playing this benefit concert as part of the ASSH annual meeting this year," says David Ring, MD, PhD, chair of MGH Quality and Safety for Orthopaedic Surgery and director of Research of the Hand and Upper Extremity Service, who plays the guitar. "There will be two bands -- called 'RTLB' and 'Sagittal Band' -- made up of current and former MGH and Partners surgeons. We'll play the gig to benefit the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand, and we are looking forward to seeing other MGHers in the crowd. Many have heard about these bands, and this event will be a great opportunity for folks to hear us play."
In addition to Ring, MGHer Richard de Asla, MD, co-director of the MGH Foot and Ankle Service, is a member of the bands and plays keyboard. RTLB and Sagittal Band will be on stage at The Harp, at 85 Causeway St., beginning at 9 pm on Oct. 7. There is no cover, but donations will be accepted.
