Work/Life Benefits

Massachusetts General Hospital provides excellent work/life benefits designed to help employees live their lives to the fullest.

Work/life benefits at Mass General include:

Earned Time

Mass General employees accrue earned time off based on years of service and standard hours. This bank of earned time is used for holidays, illness, vacation or personal days. New full-time employees earn up to 29 days annually (this is prorated for part-time employees). Mass General observes nine core holidays, which are taken out of employees’ earned time bank.

Fitness Center

Mass General employees have access to The Clubs at Charles River Park, a full-service fitness center located directly behind the hospital’s main campus. All benefits-eligible Mass General employees or Mass General-based Partners employees can join The Clubs at a special subsidized rate.

Tuition Reimbursement

Employees can receive up to $2000 per fiscal year for degreed program courses and up to $750 for approved certification courses, depending upon the number of hours per employee work week and length of service for each employee.

FLEX for Your Personal Benefit

FLEX is a comprehensive program that lets employees choose how to allocate benefits credits that Mass General provides as part of the total compensation package. Two types of benefit credits are available under FLEX:

  • Medical participation credits, which are used to purchase health care coverage. The credits vary depending on what type of health care coverage you elect. Employees must elect health care coverage through Mass General to receive the medical participation credits.
  • Basic credits, which are used to purchase your other benefits. To be eligible for benefits, employees must be regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours a week. Credits are prorated for part-time employees.

Retirement

The MassGeneral Cash Balance Retirement Plan assists employees with financial security in retirement. Once an employee becomes eligible, that employee’s account is credited annually with an amount based on age, annual pay and length of service.

Mass General also offers Tax Sheltered Annuities [403(b)] that enable employees to save for retirement voluntarily on a pretax basis through TIAA-CREF, Fidelity and Vanguard.
