New Developments

The Center for Community Health Improvement has been working hard to implement six strategic objectives. Three outside national experts reviewed our work to identify strengths and areas for improvement.  They made six key recommendations. Progress in implementing those recommendations is below:

  1. Mission - Incorporate commitment to the community into the mission statement.
Progress -The Trustees at MGH approved a new hospital mission statement that reflects the hospital's commitment to improving the health of the community. See MGH's Commitment.

  2. Departmental Initiatives - Engage and fully integrate each of the clinical departments into the mission, vision and strategic plan of the hospital.
Progress - Each of the 19 academic clinical departments have been directed to partner with the Center for Community Health Improvement to develop community-oriented initiatives of significant scope and impact within three years.

  3. CB Medical Director - Create a medical director of Center for Community Health Improvement to act as a liaison to the medical community and to work with the clinical departments in implementing new initiatives.
Progress - Jeffrey P. Collins, MD now serves as the medical director of the Center for Community Health Improvement.

  4. Governance - Establish clear accountability for the Center for Community Health Improvement within the governance structure of the hospital.
Progress - The Center for Community Health Improvement Advisory Committee was created to provide accountability. The Center for Community Health Improvement Advisory Committee is chaired by MGH president, Dr. Slavin, and is comprised of hospital and community leaders.

  5. Resource Development - Commit hospital resources to institutional priorities.
Progress - A major gifts officer was hired to work exclusively on raising funds for the Center for Community Health Improvement. To make a donation or for donation information, please email Shawn Fitzgibbons.

  6. Dissemination - Communicate our work in the popular media, at national meetings and in the peer reviewed journals.
Progress - The MGH Center for Community Health Improvement presented 14 abstracts at the American Public Health Association conference in Boston last year. In addition, numerous publications including a front page story in The Boston Globe on the work of the Charlestown Substance Abuse Coalition have been published.
