MGH Summer Jobs Program
MGH and satellite MGH health centers in Charlestown, Chelsea, and Revere provide summer employment to Boston-area youth, exposing them to health-related careers and fostering career development.
As the city’s largest health care employer, MGH possesses a unique capacity to provide meaningful employment opportunities to Boston’s youth. As part of Boston Mayor Menino’s Summer Jobs Campaign, MGH is the city’s largest employers of Boston's summer youth. The program offers young people positive summertime activities as they are exposed to health-related careers that could be in their own future.
Since 1991, MGH has employed students from East Boston High School, Timilty Middle School, Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers, and other partner programs. Students may work at MGH or MGH health centers in Revere, Charlestown, and Chelsea. Students work in departments throughout the hospital, including nursing, pharmacy, patient transport, research labs, and more. To maximize their experience with young people, students’ supervisors participate in a program orientation and training, and students receive additional support through weekly workshops focused on personal and professional development.
In 2012:
- 150 youth served.
- The students participated in five workshops that focused on health and wellness, and taught students strategies for cultivating healthy, supportive relationships in their lives, as key contributors to their health, well-being and success. On the last week of the program, all of the students came together for a career panel that featured a diverse group of STEM professionals from the hospital.
- To curb summer weight gain, 16 rising 9th graders who graduated from the Timilty Middle School in 2012 and were placed in summer jobs at MGH also participated in a summer fitness club. During the six-week program, this cohort of students met twice a week at the end of the work day with a certified health and fitness coach who had them create personal health goals and led them in interactive dance & yoga activities
