MGH Summer Jobs Program

Since 1991, MGH has employed students from East Boston High School, Timilty Middle School, Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers, and other partner programs. Students from Revere and Chelsea High Schools and the Charlestown neighborhood now are part of the program.

Massachusetts General Hospital provide meaningful employment opportunities young people from select high schools. The program offers young people positive summertime activities as they are exposed to health-related careers that could be in their own future.

At MGH or MGH health centers in Revere, Charlestown, and Chelsea, students work in various departments, including nursing, pharmacy, patient transport, research labs, and more. To maximize their experience with young people, students’ supervisors participate in a program orientation and training, and students receive additional support through weekly workshops focused on personal and professional development.

Outcomes

In 2013:

  • 165 high school age youth served and 101 MGH volunteer supervisors mentored students.
  • The students were required to attend orientation meetings prior to the start of the program that incorporated best practices in the workplace.  The 2-day progressive workshops mentioned above also incorporated professional development strategies around communication, listening and asking for help.
  • 5 workshops were tailored to two student cohorts (9-10th graders and 11-12th graders). Each cohort participated in 2-day progressive workshops that focused on health and wellness and taught students strategies for cultivating healthy, supportive relationships in their lives. All of the students attended the 5th workshop - a career panel of several MGH professionals from various departments. The panelists shared their roles within the hospital, the skills required to be successful and their educational backgrounds/requirements.
  • 16 rising 9th graders, who graduated from the Timilty Middle School in 2013 and placed in summer jobs at MGH, also participated in a summer fitness club twice a week at the end of the students’ work day.  Students met with a certified health and fitness coach who had them create personal health goals and led them in interactive dance and yoga activities. MGH supervisors/mentors were also coached/trained on strategies for making the workplace a positive learning environment for their assigned students.
