Jonathan Rosand is a clinician-scientist and critical care neurologist with expertise in cerebrovascular disease. Educated at Columbia University, he completed clinical training in internal medicine, neurology and vascular and critical care neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then undertook research training at the Harvard School of Public Health, the Program for Medical and Population Genetics of the Broad Institute, and in the research group of Steven M. Greenberg. In his roles as investigator, clinician and teacher, Dr Rosand is dedicated to improving the outcome of patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.

The aim of Dr Rosand’s research is to discover the causes of stroke and apply these discoveries to the development of both acute and preventative treatments. A major focus is to define the phenotypic manifestations of cerebrovascular disease most appropriate for genetic investigation and then identify the genetic architecture of these phenotypes. Ongoing projects combine clinical, neuroimaging and genetic characterization of patients with stroke, with whole genome association studies. In addition to his research focus in stroke genetics, Dr. Rosand conducts clinical trials and cares for patients with both ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes.

Dr. Rosand’s group works in an integrative and collaborative environment involving geneticists within CHGR and the Broad Institute, imaging scientists from the Martinos Center, and clinical investigators within the MGH Stroke Service. Dr. Rosand’s laboratory is located in the CHGR, in space shared with that of the Altshuler and Daly labs, providing a fertile community for collaboration and innovation.

Complementing his role as investigator, Dr. Rosand directs the Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School Fellowship Training Program in Vascular and Critical Care Neurology. This program, the largest and most distinguished in the United States, trains neurologists in all aspects of stroke care and critical care neurology. The strong mentorship provided by Dr. Rosand is a central feature of this program. His aim is to help develop a generation of clinician-educators and clinician-scientists who will provide state-of-the-art care, while helping to bring scientific innovations to the bedside.
