Natalia Rost, MD
Dr. Natalia Rost is MGH Stroke
Neurologist and Instructor in Neurology at Harvard
Medical School. Natalia received her M.D. from
Boston University School of Medicine cum laude
and completed her internship in Medicine at
Massachusetts General Hospital (2003), and residency
in Neurology (2006) and fellowship in Vascular
and Critical Care Neurology at the Massachusetts
General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s Hospital
(2007).
Dr. Rost is a diplomate of the
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and
a recipient of the National Stroke Association
Clinical Research Training Fellowship in Cerebrovascular
Disease. Natalia is an affiliate member of the
MGH Center for Human Genetic Research and the
Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Her research
interests and expertise are in the field of
genetics and genomics of stroke and intracerebral
hemorrhage, neuroimaging of cerebrovascular
disease, and outcome prediction.

Lynelle Cortellini, MSc
Lynelle Cortellini is the Project
Manager for the Rosand Lab. Some of her major
projects include coordination of the International
Stroke Genetics Consortium and the “Genetics
of Cerebral Hemorrhage with Anticoagulation”
multi-site study at the J. Philip Kistler Stroke
Research Center. Lynelle received her Bachelor
of Science degree from Tufts University (Medford,
MA) and her Master of Science degree from Brown
University (Providence, RI). She works with
investigators from around the globe as part
of collaborative efforts to identify genes that
may play a role in developing both ischemic
and hemorrhagic stroke.

Alessandro Biffi, MD
Alessandro Biffi is a Postdoctoral
Research Fellow in the Rosand Lab. He is currently
involved in the “Genetics of Cerebral
Hemorrhage with Anticoagulation” multi-site
study at the J. Philip Kistler Stroke Research
Center, as well as in other projects aimed at
uncovering the genetic basis of cerebrovascular
disorders. Alessandro received his MD degree
from University of Milan-Bicocca (Milan, Italy).
He is also part of research efforts aimed at
developing and testing non-invasive Intracranial
Pressure (ICP) measuring instruments.

Jordi Jimenez-Conde, MD, PhD
Jordi Jimenez-Conde is a postdoctoral
research fellow of the Rosand Lab at the Center
for Human Genetics Research of Massachusetts
General Hospital, and an affiliate of the Broad
Institute of MIT and Harvard. Jordi is a neurologist
from Hospital Universitari del Mar (Barcelona,
Spain) devoted to research on cerebrovascular
diseases. He is currently in a fellowship focused
on analysis of genetic risk factors for white
matter intensity, intracranial hemorrhages and
ischemic stroke working closely with members
of MGH and the Broad.

Allison Kanakis
Allison Kanakis works on neuroimaging
research with the Rosand Lab. She is currently
an undergraduate at Boston University pursuing
a degree in cell biology, molecular biology,
and genetics. Her major project has been quantifying
white matter disease in ischemic stroke patients.

Ashley Martin, BA
Ashley Martin is a graduate student
in the Rosand Lab. Her current research involves
a neuroimaging analysis-based comparative study
between ordinal and volumetric measures of MRI-detectable
white matter hyperintensity (WMH) under the
direction of Natalia Rost, MD. Ashley received
her Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical
Engineering from Boston University (Boston,
MA) and is currently working on her Master of
Arts degree in Medical Sciences from Boston
University School of Medicine. She works in
collaboration with the MGH Stroke Research team
to investigate clinical, neuroimaging, and genetic
determinants of ischemic stroke and white matter
disease.

Adriana Perilla, BA
Adriana Perilla is a graduate
student in the laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Rosand.
Adriana received her Bachelor of Arts degree
in Biology with a Specialty in Neuroscience
in 2007 from Boston University, and currently,
she is working toward her Master’s in
Medical Sciences degree from Boston University
School of Medicine. Under the mentorship of
Dr. Natalia Rost, Adriana is studying the neuroimaging
characteristics of acute ischemic infarction
in the context of clinical correlations as well
as genetics and genomics of cerebrovascular
disease.

Kevin Sheth, MD
Dr. Kevin Sheth is a Neuro-Critical
Care Fellow in the MGH/BWH/Harvard Medical School
program. Kevin received his M.D. from the University
of Pennsylvania School of Medicine Alpha Omega
Alpha and completed his internship in Internal
Medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital
and subsequently, a residency in neurology at
Massachusetts General Hospital/Brigham and Women’s
Hospital, where he was a chief resident.
Dr. Sheth is a diplomat of the
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
He has been a recipient of grants from the American
Medical Association and the American Academy
of Neurology. His research interests and expertise
are in the areas of new technologies in the
neuro-intensive care unit, where he is currently
developing non-invasive methods to measure intracranial
pressure, using ear and eye based methods. In
addition, he is also studying risk factors associated
with poor outcome in intracerebral hemorrhage.

Andy Simmons, BA
Andy Simmons is a student intern
for the Rosand Lab. His projects include organizing
a comprehensive database of subject genotype
and phenotype information and helping with patient
recruitment for clinical research studies. Andy
received a bachelor’s degree in Russian
Studies from Principia College and worked for
several years with an international conflict
prevention organization in Washington, DC. He
is currently completing a post-baccalaureate
premedical program at the Harvard Extension
School and plans to begin medical school in
the fall of 2010.

Akshata Sonni, BS
Akshata Sonni is a research technologist
with the Rosand Lab at the Center for Human
Genetics Research of Massachusetts General Hospital,
and an affiliate of the Broad Institute of MIT
and Harvard. Akshata received her Bachelor of
Science degree in Microbiology at the University
of Massachusetts (Amherst, MA) and is currently
applying to graduate school. She works closely
with members of MGH and the Broad to investigate
genetic risk factors for hemorrhagic and ischemic
stroke, and white matter disease (WMD).

Anna Plourde, BA
Anna Plourde is a research technologist
with the Rosand Lab at the Center for Human
Genetics Research (of Massachusetts General
Hospital) and an affiliate of the Broad Institute.
Anna completed her BS in Biology and Classics
at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst,
MA) and is currently attending medical school
the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
She works closely with the lab’s project
leads to investigate genetic risk factors for
hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, and white matter
disease (WMD).
Rosanna Rahman, PhD
Rosanna Rahman is a Fulbright
and AAUW postdoctoral research fellow in neurology
at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts
General Hospital and is an affiliate staff member
at the Broad Institute. Rosanna completed her
BSc Honors in Neuroscience at Dalhousie University
(Nova Scotia, Canada) and her PhD in Neuropharmacology
at the University of Otago (Dunedin, New Zealand).
Her research at HMS/MGH focuses on genetic risk
factors for white matter disease (WMD) and the
potential role of mitochondria in the pathology
of WMD. Rosanna is currently attending medical
school at the University of Otago.
