MAKE WAY FOR DUCKLINGS: MGHfC patient Stephen, with Captain Longhorn
On a sunny Saturday afternoon in June, a group of MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) patients and their families climbed aboard a Boston Duck Tours vehicle for a special tour of the city. The popular Boston activity was made possible through a gift from an anonymous donor.
After cruising through city streets, the star-spangled amphibious landing vehicle, Old Gloria, glided into the Charles River Basin, eliciting cheers from the group of 23. MGHfC patient Stephen, 11, and his family quacked and laughed as their guide, “Captain Longhorn,” cracked jokes and shared historical facts. It was the Boston natives’ first time on the tour, and Stephen, whose favorite subject in school is history, shouted out answers to Longhorn’s quiz questions throughout the trip. While in the water, Stephen volunteered to take over as captain for awhile, steering the boat alongside the Longfellow Bridge with ease.
“My favorite part was when we went from land to water,” Stephen says. “Also, saying ‘quack’ to everyone was really fun.”Read more articles from the 07/13/12 Hotline issue.
