A GENEROUS GIFT: From left, Allyson Ahern, associate director of corporate and foundation relations for Development, Reardon, and Brenda Miller, RN, nursing director of Ellison 17 and 18, watch as Mathis looks at the framed photograph he received from the Child Life Department as a thank you for the company’s donation.
Spirit Halloween SuperStores representatives Dan Mathis and Michael Cutting presented the MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) Child Life Department with a check for $33,840 on Feb. 5.
The donation was the company’s largest contribution since it began supporting MGHfC through its Spirit of Children program, in which local stores collect donations for area hospital child life departments during the Halloween season. This year the company had a spike in donations, leading to a $10,000 increase. In total, the company has donated more than $100,000 to MGHfC.
The funds are used in a variety of ways to purchase crafts, toys, games, books and movies to make pediatric patients more comfortable during their hospitalization.
The program also sponsors and hosts a yearly Halloween party, bringing goody bags and providing MGHfC pediatric patients with the opportunity to engage in games, face painting and pumpkin decorating.
During the check presentation celebration, Child Life Specialist Ashley Reardon presented Mathis and Cutting with a framed photo from this year’s Halloween party as a token of appreciation for their support. “We have a program that we’re lucky to be involved with,” said Mathis, Spirit’s Northeast region zone manager. “We’re in awe of what you guys do and we’re honored to be a part of it.”
Reardon and Debra Burke, RN, MSN, MBA, associate chief nurse, also invited Mathis to bring his district sales managers for a tour of MGHfC’s inpatient units at the start of the next Halloween season for them to see firsthand how their fundraising makes a difference.
