Biography

Dr. Nahel Elias is a multi-organ abdominal transplant surgeon dedicated to kidney, liver, and pancreas recipients' care. He received his MD from the University of Damascus, Syria in 1994, was a Transplant Surgery Research Fellow at McGill (Montreal) and Michigan1994-1997.

He completed surgical residency in Michigan in 2002, a Multi-Organ abdominal Transplant Surgery fellowship in 2004 at MGH, and subsequently joined the Transplant Surgery service staff at MGH. Since then, Dr. Elias has developed protocols supporting solutions to organ shortage; including collaboration with ICUs, operating room, and New England Organ Bank advancing donation programs at regional hospitals. He has evolved the transplant database and electronic record system, and chairs the MGH Transplant Center Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement since 2008.

In 2012 Dr. Elias took over as Surgical Director of Renal Transplantation, and the program has progressed greatly since. Its volume has surpassed other New England programs and maintained excellent results. It continues to improve and address patient's needs and satisfaction.

In addition, Dr. Elias has great interest in hepato-cellular carcinoma, has participatedin the Cancer Center's multi-disciplinary liver cancer clinic since itsinception, both as a transplant surgeon and a hepato-biliary surgeon. Hisskills in surgical care provide many options to his patients with liver disease.These include transplantation, as well as other hepato-biliary and portalhypertension procedures. Dr. Elias teaches medical students, residents, andfellows, and directs a Harvard Medical School course on transplant surgery. Healso speaks frequently locally, nationally, and internationally about Transplantation,conducts research on Immuno-suppression, and hepatitis C management, and hascontributed to the medical literature. He has won many awards and is a memberof many Surgical and transplant societies.
