Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at MassGeneral Hospital for Children provides monitoring and life-sustaining treatment for critically ill patients suffering from a wide range of illnesses.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

In 1971 Dr. I. David Todres, a founding father of pediatric intensive care, established the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Massachusetts General Hospital. One of the early and premier intensive care units for children in the world, the unit has continued to grow and flourish since its inception. In June 2006, MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC) announced the completion of a new, state-of-the-art, 14-bed unit. Each patient room is private and set up to allow a parent/guardian to remain at their child’s bedside 24/7. Alternatively, there are a number of family sleep rooms adjacent to the unit where family members may stay during their child’s PICU hospitalization. Patient rooms are equipped to support ECMO, CVVH, continuous EEG monitoring and more.

The PICU at MGHfC provides monitoring and life-sustaining treatment for critically ill patients suffering from a wide range of illnesses. We provide advanced cardiovascular, respiratory and neurological support. In order to optimize the care of both the child and family, the pediatric intensivisits, in collaboration with the critical care nurses, orchestrate a multidisciplinary team that includes medical and surgical subspecialists, as well as:
