FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, Boston Bruins players stepped into the "hot seat" -- or in this case, barber shop chairs -- to raise money for the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Unit at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC). Spearheaded by Bruins player Shawn Thornton, 12 members of the team had their head shaved by fans who bid to do the honors for their favorite players. Two of MGHfC's own patients, 7-year-old Tim Dowdy and 10-year-old Michael Galligani, also took a turn with the clippers.
Howard Weinstein, MD, chief of MGHfC's Hematology-Oncology Unit, kicked off the event by having his head shaved in the first round alongside Thornton and Fred Toucher of 98.5 FM's "The Toucher and Rich Show," which co-sponsored the event. "I would like to thank Shawn Thorton and the Bruins for their dedication and commitment to our childhood cancer program," said the newly shaved Weinstein. The event -- which included an auction of four Bruins tickets, an autographed Bruins jersey and a postgame meet and greet with Thornton -- raised $25,000, which will go toward purchasing portable media stations to be used by art and music therapists in the HOPES Program at the MGH Cancer Center.
