Dr. Maria Troulis puts reality in "Boston Med"

Oral surgeon featured on ABC News documentary filmed at Mass General

When ABC News wanted to film high stakes, cutting edge medical drama they headed to Mass General where they found oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Maria Troulis working in the emergency room with a team of residents to save Framingham Police Officer Phillip Hurton, who had taken a bullet to the face.  The cameras followed Troulis to the operating room where the bullet was extracted successfully.

This facial trauma-drama, featured in the first episode of "Boston Med," scheduled to air June 24th on Channel 5, is not uncommon to hospital-based oral and maxillofacial surgeons, particularly those at Mass General.  Dr. Troulis hopes the series will reveal "the reality of hospital-based care."   Here at Mass General, over the course of a day, oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat a broad range of patients from those like Officer Hurton to children born with facial deformities, from patients with oral cancers to college-aged students with impacted wisdom teeth.

"We intersect with people at many stages of life and in times of health and heartache," says Dr. Troulis.  "Sometimes the best we can do is not good enough, yet when we do an operation and a patient comes out better, it's very rewarding."
