MGHfC Launches New Weight Management Programs

17/Oct/2012

Weight management continues to be a struggle for many children and teens as obesity rates rise, and the battle can be especially difficult during the approaching holiday season. In an effort to help teens and parents learn strategies and skills to promote and sustain a healthy lifestyle, the MassGeneral Hospital for Children Weight Center and MGH Pediatric Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep and Cystic Fibrosis Center are launching three new weight management programs.

ENRGY! Exercise, Nutrition and Relaxation for Growing Youth

Description: ENRGY is a family-based program for teens who want to learn more about how to manage their weight with “real-life” strategies (no diets!) to fit their busy lives. The course, taught by MassGeneral Hospital for Children Weight Center staff, covers topics such as choosing healthy food substitutes, understanding food industry marketing tactics, reading food labels, and eating healthy on a busy schedule and tight budget. If possible, parents and caregivers are encouraged to schedule an appointment for their child(ren) at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children Weight Center prior to the beginning of this course. This will allow Weight Center staff to complete a comprehensive evaluation of each child’s overall health, to individualize the approach to better weight health and to monitor the progress of each child.

Schedule: The course runs for 7 weeks, and all sessions are held on Fridays from 4 to 5:30 pm at the MassGeneral Weight Center for Children, 50 Staniford Street, 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02114.

Registration: For more information and to register for the program, please call 617-726-0115. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to schedule an appointment for their child(ren) at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children Weight Center prior to the beginning of this course. This will allow Weight Center staff to complete a comprehensive evaluation of each child’s overall health, to individualize the approach to better weight health and to monitor the progress of each child.

Parenting for Health

Description: Parenting for Health provides parents and caregivers of children under 12 with skills and resources they need to manage their child(ren)’s weight effectively. The course does not promote diets of any kind, and empowers families to use practical and sustainable strategies for weight management. The course is taught Christina Scirica, MD, MPH, a MassGeneral Hospital for Children pulmonologist and weight expert, who has experienced first-hand the challenge of raising healthy children in the current environment.

Schedule: The course runs for 7 weeks, and all sessions are held on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 10:30 am at the MassGeneral Weight Center for Children, 50 Staniford Street, 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02114.

Inspired Health

Description: Inspired Health offers expert evaluation and management of both asthma and weight. Because asthma and weight affect each other in complex ways, it is often difficult to manage each condition on its own. Inspired Health’s goal is to treat both conditions together – each patient will undergo an initial evaluation to assess his or her current health, asthma control, weight and level of conditioning, as well as other factors that might impact care. The MGH Pediatric Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep and Cystic Fibrosis Center staff, which includes a registered dietitian and social worker, works closely with each patient and family to develop individualized action plans and implement achievable goals with follow up.

Program appointments: Inspired Health is located at the MGH Pediatric Pulmonary, Allergy, Sleep and Cystic Fibrosis Center at 175 Cambridge Street, 5th Floor, Boston, MA 02114. T To schedule an appointment, please call 617-726-8707.  For more information about this and other weight programs at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, please email Christina Scirica, MD, MPH, at cscirica@partners.org.
