Songs for His Sister

Music filled the Hard Rock Cafe on Dec. 18 as Boston-based music artist Joe Diaz hosted a concert to raise funds for pediatric cancer research at MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

Dias and his sister, Gianna

Dias’ sister, Gianna, was diagnosed and treated at MGHfC for Chordoma, a rare type of cancer that occurs in the bones of the skull and spine. Although age 16 at the time of his sister’s death in 2012, Dias knew he wanted to use his passion for music to honor her by giving back to her caregivers. Diaz first put together an unofficial concert at the popular Middle East Club in May, where he raised more than $1,500 and bought toys for children on Ellison 18, where his sister stayed as an inpatient.

Approximately 150 fans, family and friends packed this year’s all ages performance, which raised nearly $2,500 and featured numerous songs interwoven with lyrics about Gianna.  Attendees were also treated to special appearances by guest rappers Ben Mader and Nick Cincotta and Boston singer Kyle Woodcock.

“The show – and all my future efforts - are not only a tribute to my sister, but all patients at Mass General and the dedicated staff who nurture them. Each child deserves everything we can possibly give,” says Dias. “The best way for me to personally do that is through my music.”
