Family Advisory Council Accomplishments

print page content

In partnership with hospital administrators and staff, the Family Advisory Council has influenced the way care is delivered in every area of the hospital. The following is a small sampling of the results of that collaboration:
  • Produced a teaching video that demonstrates how a parent/physician dialogue is improved by incorporating Family-Centered Care (FCC) principles.
  • Conducted teaching sessions for residents in which parents explained principles of FCC and shared stories illustrating their experiences of care.
  • Provided family perspectives on how to improve pain management of children in the Massachusetts General Hospital Emergency Department.
  • Participated in the design of an Emergency Department-based pain study.
  • Made recommendations regarding the design of the new Pediatric Emergency Department.
  • Advised the team renovating the Pediatric Family Lounge on designs that would be the most family friendly.
  • Participated in Quality/Safety Grand Rounds & Palliative Care Grand Rounds, explaining how providers can improve the care experience for families.
  • Expanded its membership in order to include more family representation on a broader range of pediatrics committees, including:

    • Pediatric Pain Subcommittee
    • MGHfC Quality & Safety Committee
    • Transitions Committee
    • Ethics Committee
    • Pediatric Endoscopy Planning Committee
    • Pediatric Quality & Safety "Speak Up" Subcommittee
    • Pediatric Guide Book Advisory Group
    • Safety Initiative for Pedi Patients (SIPPs)
    • Pedi Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Team (IDT)
