The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guarantees that all medical records are kept confidential. MassGeneral Hospital for Children is in full compliance with this regulation. Parents may request their child’s medical record at any time. Medical records are sometimes required when a second opinion on a child’s care is being pursued.
Parents must submit in writing a request for the release of their child’s medical record. Please allow up to thirty days for a response; there may also be a fee. Please note that medical record information can only be faxed in very few cases.
You may download an authorization form to release your child’s medical records.
Requests must be made in writing and mailed to:
Massachusetts General Hospital
Health Information Services/Correspondence Department
121 Innerbelt Rd.
Somerville, MA 02143
Phone: 617-726-2361
If you have a scheduled appointment in which you need the records fairly quickly (within a few weeks) and you’re near the hospital campus, you may come to the Founders Building, 8th floor, and request a copy of your child’s medical record. Please remember to bring a picture ID. For questions, please call Dia Morehouse at 617-726-2469.
If a child is an emancipated minor age eighteen years or older, parents cannot get copies of their medical record.
