Blood Donations

print page content

Volunteer blood donors are needed every day to give blood to thousands of patients who need it each year at Massachusetts General Hospital and MassGeneral Hospital for Children. If your child is undergoing surgery or if you’d like to donate blood to help other patients, we thank you in advance! We try to make it as comfortable as possible for individuals interested in giving a lifeline to others.

Giving blood is easy. It only takes about thirty minutes and you’ll be rewarded with refreshments and snacks. Best of all, you’ll know that you have helped a child in need.

There are exclusions for blood donors, in which we ask that you defer giving blood. But you’re eligible to give blood if you:

  • Are at least seventeen years old.
  • Feel well on the day you’re planning to donate.
  • Weigh at least one hundred pounds.
  • Do not have serious heart or lung disease.
  • Have not had dental work within the previous twenty-four hours.
  • Have eaten recently before giving blood.
  • Have a photo ID.

Eligible donors can give blood every fifty-six days. That’s up to six times a year! The Blood Donation Center at Massachusetts General Hospital is located on the main campus at 55 Fruit Street in the Gray Building Lobby.
