Hematology-Oncology Elective Information

Goals and Objectives of Rotation:

  1. Recognize, evaluate and manage common hematologic disorders, including iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia trait, transient erythroblastopenia of childhood, ITP, von Willebrand disease, hemophilia, and viral associated neutropenia.
  2. Understand and recognize the complications of the chronic hematologic conditions, such as sickle cell syndromes, chronic ITP, hemophilia, and hypercoagulable disorders, and when to refer such children for tertiary care.
  3. Understand the presentation, pathophysiology and prognosis (treatment overview) of the most common malignancies in children, including Wilms’ tumor, neuroblastoma, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, leukemias, lymphomas and brain tumors.
  4. Develop an understanding of the acute and long-term complications of cancer care in children.
