Goals and Objectives of Rotation:
The Core Elective Rotation in Pediatric Neurology will prepare the pediatrician to evaluate and manage disorders of the child’s nervous system as they present in the acute, in-patient, and the longer term outpatient contexts. Acute disorders seen in hospital include infections; non-infectious inflammatory conditions including ADEM, MS, the Guillain-Barre Syndrome and conditions associated with various connective tissue and autoimmune states; tumor; hydrocephalus; active seizure disorders; grave headache states; vascular disease of greatly varying pathophysiology; metabolic encephalopathy including hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, those resulting from various somatic organ failure and heritable metabolic disease; intoxications; psychosis; developmental malformations; and a wide range of traumatic conditions. Whereas this same general range of disorders may be encountered in the outpatient setting and when so will require informed decision, the larger outpatient exposure is to more chronic headache and seizure disorders; disorders of learning, including ADD and developmental disorders of language; a wide range of developmental, behavioral disabilities and disabilities relating to anxiety states and depression. The pervasive objective in preparing the Pediatrician for competence in relation to disorders of the nervous system is a mastery of critical historical analysis supported by directed, skilled neurology examination and the judicious, strategic use of imaging, physiology and other laboratory diagnostic tests. There is also the challenge to become acquainted with the range of community resources, be they local as in the schools or with further specialty consultation, advocacy organizations, or web based resources.
